In honor of Black History Month, our Willowbrook Senior Center sponsored several events, culminating with our “Cotton Club Comes to Willowbrook Celebration” on Friday, February 24, 2017.  The day opened with an Inspirational Session led by Pastor Evon McMurry, followed by information and education workshops, the first being on Alzheimer and Dementia, and also the importance of having a Living Trust.  Both sessions were led by Dr. Rosie Milligan that provided information for seniors.  Dr. Rosie Milligan is an Entrepreneur who has annually supported Black Writers on Tour and is a self-proclaimed Financial Guru.

During the afternoon hours, many seniors attended the Grand Re-Opening of the AC Bilbrew Library with Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and other Department Heads, who led a tour of the newly renovated library.  Our Department Director, Cynthia D. Banks, was a speaker at the event who also represented the Willowbrook Senior Center.

It was a full day with jazz ensemble, a fashion show, and a Taste of Soul Food Fellowship.  Many thanks to Wilburn Sisters Designs for bringing the fashions, Etienne of Black Catering and Event Services for the wonderful food, and Don “The 1” Jazz Ensemble.

Throughout the month, activities were planned to remind us of the great contributions that Black Americans have provided our country. If you missed the celebration this year, mark your calendars for next year and plan to join our Willowbrook seniors who know the importance of Staying in the Groove.
