LA County Medical Assistant Pilot Program Graduation Ceremony

On Thursday, April 27th 2017, forty-eight students graduated from the LA County Medical Assistant Training Program Pilot in West Covina, California.

The pilot program was developed through a partnership between our Department, East San Gabriel Valley Regional Occupation Program and Technical College, and AltaMed Health Services. Representatives from each organization, as well as from the First Supervisorial District, were present to congratulate the students on their success and award them certificates of completion.

This customized training model was tailored to the specific workforce needs of healthcare clinics in the San Gabriel Valley region. Throughout the intensive 32-week program, students went through a series of workshops which supplemented the state approved certification curriculum and included the specific competencies required of healthcare industry employees.  Each student also engaged in an externship, which allowed for hands-on experience and acclimation to the work environment.

Many of the graduates have already been hired by their externship sites as full-time medical assistants. In the coming weeks, the partners will work closely and diligently to assist the remaining students to complete their outstanding externship hours and place into full-time medical assistant positions at healthcare facilities within the surrounding community.
